Teaching, research, and service advance together: interdisciplinary lectures enter the classroom, cross-departmental communities take shape, and outreach extends to high schools.
In AY 2025–26 the Center centered on "AI × social policy," advancing teaching, research, and service together: interdisciplinary lectures entered sociology classrooms, two cross-field communities (teaching and paper-research) formed, three courses shared lesson design, and outreach reached high schools and the national academic community.

East Asian Social Futures Lab: The Boundaries of AI and Welfare
Frontiers of AI and Welfare in East Asia
Generative AI and large language models are rapidly entering social-security and welfare decision-making — from eligibility determination and long-term-care assessment to fraud detection. Convened by Assoc. Prof. Fang-Yi Huang and Prof. Chung-Yang Yeh, with Prof. Hui-Fen Hung (Soochow Social Work) and Asst. Prof. Shao-Fen Li (Institute of Health and Welfare Policy, NYCU), the community opens dialogue around three tensions: algorithmic governance vs. distributive justice, protecting the vulnerable vs. human-centered ethics, and local data vs. the verifiability of cross-national comparison.

Shared lesson design
- AI in Criminology: final projects used TSCS data to study AI early-warning bias in the social safety net; several groups extended these into theses
- AI for Social Good: group debates on "the ethical red lines of algorithmic governance," with "My social-policy dialogue with AI" reflection journals
- Social Statistics: five lectures ran in this slot; assignments moved to plain-language + AI-assisted practice

Lecture: "The Diverse Development of Comics in the Age of AI"
Veteran comic artist Chien-Hua Tseng returns after his Center lecture on Gemini-AI comics and picture books — this time speaking from a creator’s front-line experience on how comics creation and the industry are diversifying amid generative AI, from changing tools and production pipelines to new possibilities in cross-media storytelling. Students and faculty are welcome.

High-school AI Summer Camp: "AI, Big Data & Immersive Creation" workshop (with a 2027 winter camp in planning)
Coordinated by Director Fang-Yi Huang, who also leads the "AI Criminology Lab." The two-day program gathers interdisciplinary speakers: Chien-Hua Tseng (AI and arts creation), Chung-Yang Yeh (Claude website design), Wei-Gong Liu (generative-AI works high schoolers can make), Yu-Cheng Liu (turning ideas into a storytelling exhibition), Kai-Yi Chin (AR/VR/MR story stage), an NVIDIA instructor (building deployable AI products), and Mei-Jung Chen (English songs and multimodal creation with generative AI). Five camp outputs: a podcast, an AI website, AI music, an AI picture book, and a short-video ad — leading high schoolers through hands-on AI creation from a sociological lens and extending the Center’s teaching to the high-school level.

Interdisciplinary forum: "AI Employability and Social Inequality"
As AI reshapes labor-market skill demands and the higher-education curriculum map, this forum makes "social inequality" the through-line, confronting who benefits and who is left behind. Speakers: Kai-Yi Chin (Dean, College of Big Data Management), Ming-Hsiang Su (Director, AI Applications Program), Ying-Hsiang Lin (Chinese Literature), and Mei-Jung Chen (English), moderated by Fang-Yi Huang (Sociology; Center Director) with ten questions across four themes.

Selected projects and recognition
The Director was selected as a participating teacher in the 2026 MOE Digital Humanities Innovation and Humanities-AI pilot programs; the "East Asian Social Futures Lab" received a Human-Centered AI Center cross-departmental faculty-community grant for AY 2025–26; and research results advanced to the second round of the NSTC AI Innovation Award.
